Parent Commissioning
At Hampton FBC, we believe that children are a beautiful gift from God! (Psalms 127:3) Parent Commissioning is an opportunity for parents who are believers to present their child before God and the church, committing to be intentional in teaching and modeling what it looks like to follow Christ to their child. As a church family, we celebrate our parents’ commitment to live out Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it.”
What does the Bible say about Parent Commissioning?
We can see a picture of Parent Commissioning in 1 Samuel 1:27-28. Hannah, a woman who loved God, prayed year after year for God to give her a child. He answered her prayer, and she had a son whom she named Samuel. When he was born, she said “I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of Him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.”
In Luke 2:22 Joseph and Mary took infant Jesus to the temple to be presented to the Lord, entrusting Him completely to God.
Moses, in Deuteronomy 6:5-9, describes part of God’s plan for how parents should raise up their children:
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
Parent Commitments
Parent Commissioning is actually about you, as parents (including single parents), making a commitment before God and others to the be primary spiritual developers in your child’s life. Parents participating in Parent Commissioning are committed to seek the Lord’s wisdom in parenting, pray for their child and family, and model what it looks like to daily walk with the Lord.
Because you are the primary spiritual developer for your children, we ask that you commit to the following:
- Parents should have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Parents are members or regular attenders of Hampton FBC and are following Christ in their own lives.
- Parents agree with our church’s belief and mission, which can be found at hamptonfbc.org
- Parents are honoring God through the obedience of the Scriptures in their marriage and family life.
- Parents are committed to raising their child to know God and model Christ-likeness in their own lives.
